Michael Pagán Trio: Three for the Ages
Michael Pagan è un pianista, compositore e docente, che dirige il dipartimento di studi jazzistici all'Università del Missouri a Kansas City. Il vivere lontano dai grandi centri jazzistici l'ha certo penalizzato sul versante della notorietà ma le doti espressive sono eccellenti: s'esprime con raffinato senso ritmico, tocco prezioso e sapienza armonica, evidenziando doti improvvisative per niente banali.
Come s'è detto siamo entro i confini del più classico modern mainstream ed il trio non aggiunge nulla sul versante dell'originalità (ma sono davvero pochi quelli che lo fanno, oggi); c'è però maestria nel gestire volumi e colori senza eccedere e le interpretazioni si fanno apprezzare per chiarezza melodica ed eleganza.
Tra i momenti migliori ricordiamo la luminosa versione di "I Should Care" e l'intima "You Don't Know What Love Is".
