Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica: Third River Rangoon

La grafica di copertina, il nome del gruppo, il titolo dell'album e quello dei brani indirizzano senza esitazione verso la cosiddetta lounge music. Musica che non impegna la mente, che ti accarezza leggera come brezza che arriva dal mare mentre si conversa con gli amici gustando cocktails dal nome esotico... Ed in effetti Third River Rangoon si muove proprio nei territori cari all'Exotica Music, una miscela di jazz, sonorità latine e polinesiane assai di moda negli anni cinquanta e sessanta, diventata successivamente la musica più diffusa e sperimentata nei long playing ad alta fedeltà.

Ma il multi-percussionista, vibrafonista e compositore Brian O'Neill (Mr. Ho), estraendo dalla sua apprezzata "Esquivel Big Band" un quartetto di stampo cameristico, allontana l'esecuzione dalle secche di una prevedibile superficialità manieristica, grazie ad una serie di piccole invenzioni esecutive. La combinazione poi di vibrafono (suono aperto con ampio uso di riverberi) e di flauto (sonorità eteree e dilatate) sposta ulteriormente la musica verso una third stream ammantata di world grazie all'uso di percussioni etniche e, in due brani, del liuto arabo. Il risultato è complessivamente gradevole, adatto per chi ama viaggiare con la mente verso mete da sogno e per disintossicarsi dalle scorie della frenesia quotidiana.
