Ezra Weiss: The Shirley Horn Suite

Per questo omaggio alla cantante Shiley Horn, il pianista Ezra Weiss, dopo alcuni dischi alla guida di organici di medie dimensioni, sceglie la formula del piano trio ed una scaletta che alterna cavalli di battaglia della Horn con composizioni originali. Raffinata pianista oltre che cantante, la Horn raggiunse un pubblico più, dopo decenni sulla scena jazzistica, grazie alle undici incisioni per la Verve uscite negli anni '80 e '90. Il suo stile, ricco di pause, silenzi espressivi, melodie e armonie interessanti è stato ripreso da Weiss, che per questo trio ha scelto il veterano batterista Steve Williams, a lungo con la Horn. In quattro brani troviamo anche la cantante Shirley Nanette.

Le composizioni di Weiss si rifanno al mondo della famosa cantante. "I Wish I'd Met You" e "Now That You Mention It" sono molto vicine al mondo di Broadway e quindi si inseriscono bene al fianco dei brani non originali. L'intero omaggio è eseguito con sincerità ed abilità tecnica secondo la filosofia minimalista del "less is more".

Fra gli standard va segnalato "Estate" di Bruno Martino, che la Horn aveva registrato in varie occasioni (I Thought About You: Live at Vine Street, Come a Little Closer, Softly, The very best...Live - Montreal Jazz Festival 25th Anniversary Series). Ezra Weiss sceglie di eseguirla senza cantante, soltanto con il suo trio. Lirico, appassionanto, seducente, dalle note traspare pure un senso di disperazione, una commozione che da sola lascia immaginare il senso del testo.

Nell'insieme un disco di notevole spessore che suona nuovo, pur nella sua apparente semplicità, ad ogni ascolto.
