Darrell Katz è il direttore di una delle big band più interessanti degli ultimi vent'anni, quella Jazz Composer Alliance Orchestra che ripercorre con un piglio contemporaneo le intuizioni di Carla Bley e Mike Mantler, capaci di mettere assieme musicisti di grandissimo spessore alla fine degli anni sessanta con la loro Jazz Composer Orchestra Association.

In questo bellissimo The Same Thing, pubblicato dalla storica e meritoria etichetta Cadence Records, Darrell Katz si mette alla prova sul versante compositivo e coordina alla perfezione un progetto esaltante e pieno di rimandi alla realtà e al sociale, caratterizzato da una giustificata critica politica della società attuale, carica di paure, disuguaglianze e tensioni.

Lo assecondano alla perfezione i musicisti dell'orchestra e un manipolo di ospiti fra i quali spicca quel Mike Finnigan che collaborò con Jimi Hendrix quarant'anni fa. In particolare va segnalata la splendida performace vocale di Rebecca Shrimpton, una vocalist capace di lasciare una traccia molto marcata che ritaglia un profilo netto sullo straripante contesto orchestrale. Lo fa con uno stile molto contemporaneo che alterna il parlato al recitato e al canto vero e proprio. Con un controllo pressoché perfetto e una profondità veramente molto espressiva.

L'esplodere dell'orchestra si sposa alla perfezione con le composizioni e gli arrangiamenti di Katz e raggiunge il suo apice nel tributo perfettamente riuscito al blues elettrico del grande Willie Dixon. Ma tutte le altre composizioni sono altrettanto interessanti e cariche di suggestioni. Veramente al passo coi tempi.

I solisti graffiano come non mai e gli arrangiamenti sono dei gioiellini che raccontano i valori dell'artigianato musicale, del cesello e della passione. I testi della poetessa Paula Tatarunis sono perfettamente integrati con questa musica così contemporanea ed eccitante allo stesso tempo. L'impatto di questa musica carica di tensione e di poesia è devastante e questo album si candida ad occupare uno dei primi posti nella produzione artistica degli ultimi anni.
