Pasquale Laino: The River Will Carry Me

Pasquale Laino è un sassofonista e compositore che il pubblico del jazz italiano conosce quale componente del gruppo Arundo Donax, quartetto di sassofoni fondato nel 1993 con Mario Raja, Pietro Tonolo e Rossano Emili. Il suo temperamento versatile l'ha portato negli anni a sviluppare collaborazioni musicali con artisti pop (Mango, Matia Bazar, Carmen Consoli), con l'orchestra sinfonica di Roma e collaborare in qualità di assistente musicale, compositore, arrangiatore ed esecutore alla realizzazione di varie colonne sonore per la televisione ed il cinema (ricordiamo i film "Come te nessuno mai," "L'ultimo bacio," "Ricordati di me," "L'amante perduto," "Padre Pio," "Ferrari," "L'Impero," "Il giovane Casanova" ed altri).

In questo lavoro spiccano innanzitutto le belle composizioni, scritte tutte dal leader, ed il particolare equilibrio che nasce dalla collaborazione con il pianoforte di Alessandro Gwis ed il contrabbasso di Andrea Avena. L'atmosfera complessiva si caratterizza per la felice sintesi tra cantabilità folk, sensibilità cameristica ed interplay improvvisato.

Nel disco prevalgono pezzi d'atmosfera con melodie dalle tinte radiose ed interventi melodicamente accentuati, ricchi di sfumature malinconiche. Ma non mancano momenti più estroversi, anche danzanti, che movimentano lo sviluppo del lavoro evitando l'appiattimento delle dinamiche. Questi temi di ampio respiro sono spesso collegati da brevi passaggi, anche sperimentali, che fungono da raccordo, dimostrando l'ampiezza di vedute della formazione.

In definitiva un disco ricercato e d'immediata attrattiva che avrebbe un felice sbocco come commento a lavori cinematografici.
