Kurt Elling: The Questions Live
I brani in repertorio sono quelli del recente cd The Questions -con l'eccezione di "Everyday You're Away"-ma la registrazione è molto più incisiva: l'atmosfera di un club che Elling conosce bene e la vicinanza col pubblico esaltano la sua verve jazzistica, favorendo lunghe esecuzioni farcite di elettrizzanti improvvisazioni in scat.
Ad eccezione dell'ottimo pianista inglese Jimmy Watson, i partner sono gli stessi dell'ultima edizione di Umbria Jazz (e in parte del disco): il chitarrista John McLean, il bassista Clark Sommers e il batterista Adonis Rose.
Com'è noto The Questions si caratterizza per la critica sociale e politica (pensando anche all'attuale leadership statunitense) rivisitando anche temi della contestazione giovanile anni sessanta. Il percorso musicale si apre col celebre "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" di cui Elling offre una versione esuberante ed estrosa, con una lunga parte centrale in scat. Ogni brano successivo è introdotto dal cantante con appeal colloquiale e declamatorio al tempo stesso, dimostrando di essere il miglior erede di Mark Murphy. Come il grande cantante scomparso Elling affronta i temi con tensione bluesy e swingante veemenza, aspetti che non sempre troviamo nei dischi in studio.
Esemplare in questo senso è il dinamico blues "Everyday You're Away" mentre la raffinata dinamica del crooner risaltano in "Endless Lawns" il bel tema di Carla Bley con il testo scritto dallo stesso Elling.
