Falkner Evans: The Point of the Moon

Passato al jazz dopo esperienze nel rock, il pianista Falkner Evans è da anni leader di apprezzati trio attivi nell'area di New York. Oggi vara un sestetto dalle chiare connotazioni neo-bop, dopo due incisioni con Cecil McBee e Matt Wilson e un lavoro più recente (ARC, 2007) con la ritmica di questa stessa formazione. I nomi nuovi sono tre splendidi musicisti come il trombettista Ron Horton, il sassofonista Greg Tardy e l'organista Gary Versace.

Autore di quasi tutte le composizioni, Evans predilige temi dalle linee melodiche cantabili, in gran parte scritti da lui, che si snodano con ammirevole senso della forma, presentano dinamiche attentamente calibrate e impasti timbrici seducenti, dalla perfetta intonazione. Tardy ed Horton condividono in pieno l'estetica del leader, con i loro fraseggi lineari dal disegno equilibrato e calde sonorità.

Evans è un pianista quando mai sobrio e un maestro nel guidare l'organico da una posizione appartata: i suoi interventi sono sempre eleganti e misurati, il tocco lirico e volutamente non spettacolare.

Tutto molto coerente e piacevole, dunque, ma il jazz si nutre dell'imprevedibile e quando manca si sente: a metà disco si avverte la mancanza di qualche sorpresa, caratterizzata magari da climi accesi e ritmi incalzanti.
