Mark Sherman: The L.A. Sessions
La scaletta si apre con "Woody'n You" di Dizzy Gillespie e si percepisce da subito l'empatia tra i musicisti, qualità che sarà più evidente nel finale del brano.
Dopo l'esposizione dell'assolo di John Chiodini, inizia il vero dialogo all'interno del gruppo, scambi estemporanei che evolvono in una forma discorsiva succinta, poche batture a testa dove prevarrà con determinazione la fantasia del batterista Charles Ruggiero.
In "Moment's Notice" di John Coltrane incontriamo, dopo l'esposizione del tema, i veloci e precisi assoli di Bill Cunliffe e dello stesso Sherman ma a chiudere il ciclo estemporaneo è Ruggiero che metterà in circolo le sue idee tra i frammenti del tema eseguiti dai partners.
E' carica di swing invece "Bag's Groove " una rivisitazione che è anche un tributo per il collega di Sherman, Milt Jackson.
La scelta del repertorio, dei musicisti e degli strumenti musicali che Sherman, da leader, ha saputo mettere insieme, ha contribuito positivamente alla realizzazione di questo progetto dando vita ad un disco piacevole e coerente.
