Indigo Trio - Michel Edelin: The Ethiopian Princess Meets the Tantric Priest
Pizzico di follia indispensabile anche quando si mettono insieme due flauti, strumenti dal timbro molto particolare e poco frequenti nel jazz. Il flauto è infatti strumento dalla sonorità "liquida," e tranne pochi rari casi (Dolphy, Threadgill, ...), nel jazz è già raro trovarne uno. Solitamente si preferisce una voce più robusta (il sax, la tromba) o più lignea (il clarinetto).
Effettivamente, e nonostante il livello dei musicisti sia a dir poco immenso, la presenza così forte, intensa, del flauto, lascia qualche perplessità. Anche perché Bankhead e Drake rifuggono ogni protagonismo e si mettono completamente al servizio della principessa etiope e del monaco buddista di cui sopra. E dunque, i momenti più interessanti dell'album - paradossalmente - sono quelli in cui emerge la scrittura (l'esposizione o la ripresa dei temi, qualche stacco all'unisono), quelli in cui Bankhead e Drake si mettono al centro della scena (il pedale ostinato di "Wind Current"), o l'ultimo brano ("Return of the Sun"), in cui Bankhead siede al pianoforte ed altera completamente il paesaggio sonoro.
