Steffen Basho-Junghans: The Dancer on the Hill

Dopo un lungo periodo di silenzio causato da problemi di salute e difficoltà nel trovare uno sbocco discografico per i propri lavori, il chitarrista tedesco Steffen Basho-Junghans ritorna con un nuovo album, pubblicato dalla etichetta inglese Architects of Harmonic Rooms & Records, disponibile solamente su vinile e digital download.

La musica di Basho-Junghans ha sempre oscillato tra i due poli della rappresentazione di paesaggi sonori utilizzando la tecnica del raga derivata dal chitarrista Robbie Basho (di cui ha fortemente contribuito a tener viva la memoria, inserendo nel proprio nome lo stesso nome del poeta giapponese da lui utilizzato come pseudonimo) e della esplorazione sperimentale degli spazi sonori creati con lo strumento a 6 o 12 corde. Il presente lavoro non si sottrae a questa dicotomia, ma cerca di fondere i due poli in modo più deciso che in passato, utilizzando le forme espressive più libere e sperimentali all'interno di strutture compositive più ordinate e compatte.

I brani sono anche più concisi che in passato; se il precedente IS presentava tre titoli sopra i 10 minuti, qui la maggior parte oscilla tra i tre e cinque minuti di durata, mentre il più lungo è di otto minuti. Proprio questo brano, "Raga Peru," si segnala come la miglior sintesi di tutto il percorso chitarristico seguito da Basho-Junghans da quando ha intrapreso la sua personale ricerca musicale. Una menzione merita anche "Song of the Cordilleras," non presente sul vinile ma disponibile come uno dei due bonus esclusivamente digitali, ma tutti i brani meritano un ascolto attento e ripetuto per la ricchezza dei loro contenuti.

Nonostante il debito dichiarato e sempre riconosciuto nei confronti di Robbie Basho, fonte d'ispirazione continua e inesauribile, il chitarrista tedesco rappresenta una delle voci più originali e autentiche della chitarra acustica contemporanea, portando avanti una ricerca iniziata negli anni '60 da musicisti quali Sandy Bull, John Fahey e lo stesso Robbie Basho, e rappresentando un nuovo punto di riferimento per le generazioni più giovani. Ci auguriamo di ritrovarlo presto con ulteriori lavori di questo spessore.
