Gordon Grdina's East Van Strings: The Breathing of Statues

Lanciato da Gary Peacock, insieme al quale (e a Paul Motian) ha realizzato un disco in trio, Think Like the Waves, il chitarrista e suonatore di oud Gordon Grdina è qui alla guida di un quartetto nel quale è accompagnato da un trio d'archi, formazione inconsueta anche se non del tutto originale (basti ricordare il quartetto 858 di Frisell, richiamato anche dalla comune presenza di Eyvind Kang alla viola). Dei tanti progetti che lo vedono protagonista in prima persona, questo sembra essere il più adatto a veicolare la sua particolare visione musicale, a cavallo tra oriente e occidente, tra avanguardia e tradizione, tra composizione e improvvisazione, tra jazz e contemporanea.

I brani, tutti composti dal chitarrista, spaziano dalla melodia struggente dell'iniziale 'Selma' e di 'Naveli Joon' alle note laceranti di 'Webern' o 'Silence of Paintings,' per trovare la loro espressione più compiuta nei due lunghi brani che concludono il disco, il secondo dei quali registrato dal vivo. Qui il chitarrista dimostra tutta la sua originalità, fondendo il suono del suo oud con lo sfondo degli archi, sintetizzando compiutamente e mirabilmente tutte le influenze che hanno contribuito a formare la sua musica.

Sicuramente un ottimo esordio per questa formazione che speriamo di ritrovare presto con nuovi lavori di questo livello.
