Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson: Temporary Kings

La collaborazione tra il pianista Ethan Iverson e il sassofonista Mark Turner risale ai primi anni '90, quando entrambi partecipavano alle jam session che si tenevano a New York City, per poi ritrovarsi nel decennio successivo a suonare insieme nel Billy Hart. L'esperienza con quel gruppo dura ancora oggi anche se con soli tre album all'attivo, gli ultimi due dei quali sono stati pubblicati su etichetta ECM e costituiscono l'unica presenza finora del pianista nel catalogo della label tedesca. Mentre Turner negli ultimi anni ha preso parte a numerosi progetti, sia sotto suo nome che con altri musicisti, Iverson è stato prevalentemente associato col trio The Bad Plus fin dalle sue origini nel 2000, per distaccarsene solo recentemente alla fine del 2017.

Questo primo lavoro in duo è all'insegna di un raffinato ed elegante jazz da camera, esaltato anche dalla registrazione effettuata presso l'Auditorio della RSI e curata da Stefano Amerio con la consueta cura e professionalità. Sei dei nove brani proposti sono firmati dal pianista (uno, ”Yesterday's Bouquet”, è un piano solo), mentre gli altri tre sono riconducibili al sassofonista, due come sue composizioni e il terzo, ”Dixie's Dilemma”, accreditato a Warne Marsh, che per Turner ha rappresentato una delle principali influenze come sassofonista.

In tutto l'album abbondano le atmosfere classicheggianti, evidenziate dal pianismo impressionista di Iverson soprattutto nell'iniziale 'Lugano' dedicata alla città che ha ospitato le sessioni, e sottolineate dal suono morbido e fluido del sassofono di Turner. Il jazz è prevalente soprattutto nel citato brano di Marsh e nel lento, atipico blues ”Unclaimed Freight”, anche se in entrambi è sempre presente l'approccio cameristico che caratterizza l'intera opera. Le composizioni lasciano un po' di spazio anche ad alcune improvvisazioni da parte dei due musicisti, inserite con continuità nella struttura dei brani.

Complessivamente un bel disco, che richiede diversi ascolti per poter apprezzare pienamente tutte le sfumature che lo compongono. Il lavoro pone in risalto soprattutto il talento del pianista, che qui si manifesta compiutamente sia come interprete che come compositore, mentre Turner si conferma un solista sopraffino, con una delle voci strumentali più belle tra i sassofonisti della sua generazione.
