Sheila Cooper: Tales of Love and Longing
Dopo due dischi ben accolti dalla critica, in questo lavoro la Cooper è accompagnata dal sensibile pianista Fritz Pauer in una bella sequenza di storiche ballad (con l'unica eccezione di "Lonely Woman" di Ornette Coleman, riformulata sotto una luce notturna e di un brano della stessa Cooper). Il disco è stato inciso a Vienna, dove la cantante insegna da qualche anno e dove ha avuto occasione di collaborare con Pauer in varie occasioni. Più che di duo si dovrebbe parlare di trio, visto che la cantante svolge egregiamente anche il ruolo di sassofonista.
Il percorso musicale scorre con eleganza, in un confronto intimo e ricco di sottigliezze, che sarà molto apprezzato dagli estimatori del classico canto jazz d'impronta bianca. Tra i brani più coinvolgenti ricordiamo l'intensa e colloquiale "So In Love ", l'articolata "How Deep Is The Ocean" e "Body And Soul", che la Cooper affronta da sola al sax.
