RJ And The Assignment: Deceiving Eyes
by Edward Blanco
There are times when one comes across a relatively unknown talent or group, whose performance leaves quite a lasting impression, as does young pianist/songwriter RJ and his group, The Assignment. A native of Chicago who has performed throughout the country over the last fifteen years, RJ has since settled in Las Vegas, where his shining debut, ...
Franck Taschini: Merci Encore
by AAJ Italy Staff
Thelonius: Reminisce
by Bruce Lindsay
It's that pesky Bristol scene again. 2012 has already seen some fine albums emanating from the English city--Busnoys' By Tapering Torchlight (Tall Guy Records) and Andy Hague's Cross My Palm (Ooh-Err Records) are just two examples. Now along comes Reminisce, from the five-piece Thelonius, to further enhance the city's reputation for quality music.Guitarist Tim ...
Oxygene8: Loop 1
by Glenn Astarita
The musicians laid out an interesting paradigm to serve as the basis for Loop 1-- where one composition is delineated upon a continuous loop. However, this factor may not seem wholly intuitive after a few initial listens. It's largely about structure and improvisation, centered on an expansive framework, based on a concept originated by touch guitarist ...
Billie Davies: All About Love
by Hrayr Attarian
Idiosyncratic drummer Billie Davies is mostly an autodidact whose natural talent, relentless, explorative spirit and multifaceted experiences have led to an innovative approach to jazz. Her bold individualism is showcased on All About Love, a collaborative effort that has her democratically guiding an unusual, bottom- heavy ensemble with lyrical trombonist Tom Bone Ralls and versatile bassist ...
Colin Cannon: Glenville
by Ian Patterson
Though still in his twenties, guitarist Colin Cannon has been performing in New York and along the East Coast for a decade. His debut as leader, In Summary (Self Produced, 2009) revealed a young composer with ideas aplenty, and a guitarist with a broad musical palette. If that album was slightly Pat Metheny-influenced--Cannon and Metheny were ...

Motian Sickness: The Music of Paul Motian: For the Love of Sarah
by Ian Patterson
Washington, DC drummer Jeff Cosgrove's exploration of jazz drumming legend Paul Motian's music has been a labor of love. Motian, who passed away in November 2011, sent Cosgrove 29 tunes over the three years this project took to realize. Using traditional bluegrass musicians as a kind of laboratory, Cosgrove chose compositions that best fit the uncommon ...
