Strata-East, James Brandon Lewis & Phil Haynes

Click the play button to listen

Back in the '70s and '80s, flicking through the LPs at a favourite record store and finding the latest Strata East releases made the trip worthwhile. Established by trumpeter Charles Tolliver and pianist Stanley Cowell, the label that was dedicated to spiritual jazz and social consciousness was releasing music by some of the most important artists of the day. Now a new partnership between Strata-East and Mack Avenue Records is bringing the opportunity to newer generations to check out this great music for the first time (or again), and in high quality sound. For instance, Izipho Zam (My Gifts), one of the two Strata-East releases in this edition of One Man's Jazz will soon be available for the first time on CD and digital platforms, as well as on 180-gram vinyl, plus enhanced packaging.

Other new releases sampled come from James Brandon Lewis' Quartet, German reed player Daniel Erdmann's Soul Food, guitarist Phil Haynes' two albums reconnecting with guitarists, Eva Novoa with Masa Kamaguchi & Gerald Cleaver, Daniel Carter-led Makeshift Spirituals, Jazzhausmusik founder Georg Ruby solo at the piano, and the South Asia trio of Sabu Toyozumi, Richard Bates & Rick Countryman. Drummer William Hooker too, from 1977 live in New York. A full show for you.
