Per qualche strana ragione, il trio Open Loose del contrabbassista Mark Helias non gode della fama che spetterebbe ad un trio di questo calibro. Una lacuna che riflette quanto avviene, sul piano individuale, con i singoli componenti del gruppo. Tutti ottimi musicisti. Anzi, fantastici musicisti. E però, quando si parla di grandi contrabbassisti quasi mai compare il nome di Marc Helias. Idem per quanto riguarda i batteristi e Tom Rainey, o i sassofonisti e Tony Malaby. Nel nostro piccolo, cerchiamo dunque di colmare questa "lacuna", confermandovi che Strange Unison è un album molto bello ed interessante. Nel titolo, così come nel nome della band, il manifesto programmatico del trio. Una musica aperta e libera, molto equilibrata nella distribuzione dei ruoli, con i tre componenti del gruppo che svolgono un ruolo paritetico (questo capita di leggerlo spesso, lo sappiamo, ma stavolta è davvero così). Il suono corposo e potente di Helias si intreccia magnificamente con i percorsi spigolosi del sax di Malaby, mentre il drumming di Rainey si conferma perfetto in queste situazioni dalla configurazione strumentale essenziale (ricordiamo che Rainey appare anche nel trio di Tim Berne).

Musica metropolitana, molto precisa nelle sue asimmetriche geometrie, nei suoi strani unisoni. Free nel senso più ampio del termine, ma anche accessibile e dunque non contro l'ascoltatore. Jazz autentico, con radici profonde, come conferma il blues della seconda traccia, un piccolo gioiello.
