Greg Ward's Fitted Shards: South Side Story

South Side Story dovrebbe essere nelle intenzioni dell'autore la sintesi più significativa della sua storia musicale. Che ha attraversato gli ambienti più disparati, dall'avanguardia di Chicago, al jazz platinato di Al Jarreau, dalle collaborazioni con uno storico interprete come Von Freeman agli esperimenti elettronici di Prefuse 73 per citarne alcuni. Fitted Shards sono i frammenti delle molteplici esperienze musicali che Greg Ward ha riunito e incollato insieme con l'intento di dar vita, non a un semplice collage, a un patchwork stilistico, ma a qualcosa di nuovo, un'idea di musica personale.

L'ascolto di South Side Story lascia però un po' perplessi. Le doti di valente sassofonista acquisite sul campo non si discutono, Ward è autore di interventi tecnicamente pregevoli, ma sembrano una sorta di esercizio stilistico non adeguatamente sostenuto da un'idea. Anche le qualità di compositore sono apprezzabili ma in questo contesto figurano pretenziose, ricche di risvolti epici, ambizioni classicheggianti, derive glam-jazz-rock non adeguate al tipo di formazione. E l'abbondante uso del sintetizzatore contribuisce a far suonare datata una musica che nelle intenzioni doveva essere fresca e prorompente.

Complessivamente quindi South Side Story nonostante contenga più di un momento di buona musica, risulta un lavoro piuttosto deludente in relazione alle aspettative e alla statura del leader dei Fitted Shards.
