Wadada Leo Smith: Solo: Reflections and Meditations on Monk

Omaggiare la figura e la musica di Thelonious Monk è sempre una sfida ardua da superare per qualsiasi musicista. Se poi la si affronta in solitaria e nemmeno al pianoforte bensì alla tromba, ardua lo diventa ancora di più. Ma è lo stesso Wadada Leo Smith che ci rassicura. "La maggior parte delle persone -afferma nelle ricche note di copertina —non si rende conto che sono vicino a Monk più di qualsiasi altro artista. Ci accomunano, tra le altre cose, la visione sulla composizione e le sue forme, l'aspetto psicologico della musica, e il silenzio, non come momento di assenza ma come territorio dove prendono forma idee, risultato di ciò che è stato suonato prima e dopo..."

Ed è proprio il silenzio l'interlocutore privilegiato della tromba di Smith per tutti i cinquantacinque minuti di Solo: Reflections and Meditations on Monk. Quattro celebri brani di Thelonious e quattro composizioni originali formano una lunga suite nella quale le frasi vengono scolpite con estrema lucidità, le note ricevono dal silenzio, dagli intervalli più o meno dilatati un carico di significati che va ben oltre il linguaggio musicale. I classici di Monk non vengono né stravolti né destrutturati per essere poi ricomposti, semplicemente, si fa per dire, Wadada ne esalta le linee melodiche attraverso un lento, riflessivo e intimo processo di distillazione.

Splendido come al solito il packaging della finlandese TUM Records: custodia cartonata, libretto ricco di informazioni biografiche e non, art work assai curato con splendide foto e una meravigliosa riproduzione dell'artista astratto finlandese Ole Kandelin.
