Håkon Kornstad: Single Engine

Vogliamo innanzitutto tranquillizzare gli ascoltatori perché, sebbene si tratti di un disco quasi completamente per solo sassofono, non siamo di fronte a un lavoro ostico e difficile.

Altra particolarità è data dal fatto che, sebbene esca per la Jazzland Recordings, l'elettronica non ha un ruolo centrale: si tratta anzi di un viaggio nell'universo di Håkon Kornstad giocato sulla scoperta delle sfumature e sull'esplorazione delle possibilità sonore del sax.

L'inizio è lirico, il suono cristallino e ben levigato, Kornstad attacca al sax tenore e pian piano, con l'ausilio della "loop machine," stratifica i suoni prodotti al tenore e alla melodica fino ad ottenere una melodia di rara bellezza.

Il campionario in mostra è vario e ben assortito: suoni puliti e privi di sbavature al sax tenore, più grezzi ed elaborati con le ance da sassofono sui clarinetti o viceversa, e l'elettronica che amalgama nel complesso e dona freschezza senza mai andare sopra le righe.

La forte diversità - per stile e interpretazione - dei brani, dà luogo a un'opera fresca, frizzante, di grande maturità "vocale," libera da stili, regole e omologazioni.

I pochi interventi di musicisti dello spessore di Wesseltoft, Haker Flaten e Reiersrud, aggiungono sfumature a una tavolozza già piena di colori, e ne accrescono il valore senza mai apparire fuori luogo.

Il risultato nel complesso è di grande qualità e l'opera appare come una lunga suite onirica che mescola sonorità acustiche ad elementi di elettronica, radici afro-americane a echi del nord alternando esplorazione e ricerca alla melodia.

Kornstad si conferma musicista dalle grandi doti tecniche, sensibilità e poetica nel linguaggio - creatività nella composizione e improvvisazione.

Gli elementi di riferimento sono tanti, da Stan Getz ad Albert Ayler a Jan Garbarek (del primo periodo), ma il tutto realizzato con grande originalità e indipendenza da giudizi e stili codificati.

Se davvero, come afferma nell'intervista (per leggerla clicca qui), dopo Single Engine si sente oggi più sicuro e in possesso di un nuovo mondo di argomenti su cui lavorare, per il futuro ci saranno sicuramente da aspettarsi buone cose da questo giovane artista.
