Domo Branch: Hand of Gifts
A second composition, "A Letter to Peanut," on this mainly high-energy post-bop studio date by Branch's able quartet is a solemn memorial to the leader's recently deceased brother. The remaining five numbersall written by Branchinclude "Solo Drum," wherein Branch shares what he does best, using his drum kit to weave a tasteful and charming musical narrative. The drums, in fact, are prominent at every turn, starting with the rapid-fire opener, "Harlem Nights," and including "Big Moves" (the funkiest item on the menu), the groovy "Hand of Gifts" and lighthearted "Blues for the World" (which follows a brief backstage warm-up session).
Saxophonist Abdias Armenteros, who governs the melody on most numbers, plays soprano on "Harlem Nights" and "Our Man Bogle" (could that be Bogie?), tenor the rest of the way, and is impressive on both. Pianist Tyler Henderson and bassist Russell Hall round out the quartet's capable rhythm section. Henderson is an especially creative and engaging soloist, while Hall appends a well-designed statement on "Blues for the World."
Branch is an excellent writer as well as a masterful timekeeper, and he and his teammates have produced a robust and colorful small-group session that is well above the norm.
