Kris Davis Trio: Run the Gauntlet
Poi la musica: un piano trio pieno, vitale, contemporaneo ma senza eccessi, come già l'iniziale title—track, tredici minuti di un jazz fluente, privo di particolari barriere, ci dice eloquentemente. Poi, però, ecco subito appresso "Softly, As You Wake," poco più di tre minuti giocati fra piano preparato (e non), archettato di contrabbasso e sapienti colpi di batteria, a farci capire che il disco è anche altro: una ricerca attenta, puntuale, convinta, capace di aprire scenari di varia natura e temperatura, ciò che i brani che seguono confermano senza mezzi termini, da "First Steps," ronzante piano solo, a un nuovo episodio aperto, anche nervoso, in trio, "Little Footsteps," via via toccando questi e altri tasti, con esiti particolarmente felici, nella loro fertile eterogeneità, in "Heavy-footed," "Beauty Beneath the Rubble Meditation" e nei conclusivi "Dream State" e "Subtones."
Un solido disco di piano trio contemporaneo capace di toccare tanti tasti senza mai scivolare nella genericità o nell'eclettismo fine a se stesso. Composizioni tutte di Kris Davis, incisione del gennaio 2024.
