Buck Hill: Relax
E dopo le produzioni di mainstream degli anni ’90 per la Steeplechase, il settantanovenne musicista di Washington compie un’ampia, inattesa virata musicale, per approdare nei territori soulful. La formula del tradizionale quartetto con sax-organo-chitarra-batteria è indicativa delle atmosfere che animano il suo più recente CD per la Severn Records.
Organo Hammond in primo piano, per segnare un disco molto godibile, oscillante senza soluzione di continuità tra il beat più tipicamente jazzistico e ritmi danzabili, ricchi di groove. E per non farsi mancare nulla, una bella, suadente bossa nova, maggiormente concentrata sul solismo del leader. Ma - dispiace dirlo - esaurito l’effetto sorpresa, il CD scorre poi senza grossi colpi d’ala, fino ad addentrarsi nelle sabbie mobili di una musica scontata ancorché ripetitiva.
I momenti migliori del disco rimandano quindi al solismo di Hill, che giganteggia da par suo ancora nella rivisitazione di due temi davisiani (“Flamenco Sketches”, "Milestones”). Buona anche la prova di John Ozment all’organo Hammond, per via di una condotta dinamica e swingante ma anche puntuale e precisa nelle atmosfere non danzabili.
