Odean Pope: Plant Life

Noto al grande pubblico per la sua lunga militanza nei gruppi di Max Roach, il tenorista Odean Pope è strumentista che per convenzione viene incluso nei "post-coltraniani," ma nel cui vigore espressivo troviamo anche molti altri riferimenti alla grande tradizione sassofonistica afroamericana.

Il recente Plant Life, pubblicato dalla ottima Porter Records, lo vede alla testa di un trio completato dal contrabbassista Lee Smith e dalla batteria di Sunny Murray, formazione che gli consente di mettere in luce tutta la capacità di muoversi con libertà armonica e energia a partire da frammenti tematici.

La particolare varietà delle situazioni sonore affrontate - da momenti più lineari a altri decisamente più coraggiosi e sperimentali - è al tempo stesso il pregio e il limite di questa fatica discografica, nella quale il rapporto con un drumming così peculiare come quello di Murray viene risolto a fasi alterne, risultando particolarmente felice negli aspetti più esplorativi e meno risolto quando l'energia sembrerebbe richiamare un groove più marcato.

A questa ambiguità contribuisce Lee Smith, solido, ma non dotato di una personalità tale da consentire un ponte forte tra i due linguaggi dei compagni di avventura. Comunque gustose le otto tracce e ricche di musicalità.
