Maurizio Carugno & his friends: Papillon

“Il jazz è musica d’arte e chiede quindi di essere incontrato e non consumato” afferma nelle note di copertina Maurizio Carugno. Parole sacrosante che non esitiamo a sottoscrivere, ma che in Papillon, il disco del sassofonista con incisioni dal vivo effettuate tra agosto 1995 e aprile 2005, non sempre trovano riscontro. Troppo diseguale e altalenante, in relazione a situazioni e compagni di viaggio, risulta essere la resa musicale.

Leggeri e sbiaditi, assai vicini ad atmosfere da piano-bar, paiono i brani provenienti dalla sala concerti della nave da crociera, mentre le interpretazioni in dialetto calabrese di due classici come “Misty” e “Lady Is a Tramp”, lasciano poche tracce, mancando di quel mordente e di quella ironia musicale che potevano rendere l’idea interessante.

Un vero peccato, perché negli altri contesti Carugno si conferma tenorista dotato di un suono caldo e robusto, ed in possesso di un fraseggio agile e articolato. Si ascoltino i brani in quartetto con Dave Kikoski al piano ed Essiet Essiet al basso, nei quali i due americani spingono sull’acceleratore, sostenuti dal drumming sicuro di Marcello Pillitteri, e la musica libera una grande energia. O l’intensa interpretazione dell’originale “My Tresor”, dove il dialogo tra il sax di Carugno e la chitarra di Joe Diorio è tutto giocato sul filo della sensibilità e della raffinatezza armonica.
