Gli audio books sono ormai una realtà che ha portato alle case editrici una piccola fetta di mercato in più, quella dei CD. Abituati ad ascoltare in auto racconti e romanzi letti da professionisti della dizione non ci sorprende ascoltare un disco come questo Pandemonium, in cui il poeta Barry Wallenstein presta la propria voce alle poesia che ha scritto, accompagnato da un eterogeneo quintetto di musicisti jazz che improvvisano delle atmosfere suggestive.

Il contatto fra jazz e poesia non è di certo nuovo, dai poeti della beat generation affascinati dal bop e Charlie Parker ad autori più moderni, come Mark Weber che recita delle poesie, fra cui una dedicata a Warne Marsh, insieme al quartetto di Connie Crothers.

Su Pandemonium l'accento è più sui testi che sulla musica, in quanto il gruppo fa da sottofondo, improvvisando al momento, alle parole di Wallenstein: si sofferma a sottolineare le storie raccontate, a volteggiare fra sprazzi di blues e avanguardismi intorno ai versi recitati. Tutto con molta professionalità e cura, con rispetto reciproco da parte di musicisti che provengono da aree diverse, come Curtis Lundy, autore di solito di un bop corposo con le radici negli anni `60, e Daniel Carter, spesso presente nell'area dell'avanguardia.

Ci sono delle atmosfere suggestive in quest'album, un'opera in fondo multimediale, con le poesie da leggere nel booklet e la musica che accompagna la voce recitante. Un insieme affascinante per chi padroneggia la lingua di Shakespear, meno per gli altri.
