Count Basie: One More Time - Music from the Pen of Quincy Jones

L'orchestra di Count Basie è sinonimo di swing, energia, blues e soprattutto è perfetta espressione di quell'umanità allo stesso tempo romantica e brutale che è sinonimo di Jazz. La sua storia è di solito divisa in due fasi, quella della Old Testament Band, illuminata dal genio di Lester Young e alimentata dal blues di Kansas City, e la New Testament, nata nel dopoguerra all'insegna del matrimonio fra i valori di sempre e una nuova arte dell'arrangiamento, che trovò in Neal Hefti il primo interprete. Negli anni successivi, Basie incontrò altri arrangiatori e seppe fondere le loro scelte con la personalità della sua orchestra, da lui plasmata con estrema cura.

"The Atomic Mr. Basie" è il simbolo di questa nuova fase, presto seguito da "One More Time" (1959), primo esempio della lunga e fruttuosa collaborazione col giovane emergente Quincy Jones. Questi sarebbe poi divenuto l'arrangiatore prediletto per le session con cantanti del calibro di Sinatra, mentre i brani strumentali erano opera di artisti come Benny Carter, Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Sammy Nestico.

La scrittura di Quincy colse la natura di Basie, le innovazioni di Hefti e trovò il modo aggiungere un tocco personale, sia nelle linee melodiche (su tutte la splendida For Lena and Lennie poi incisa nel capolavoro "The Quintessence"), che nelle armonizzazioni e nei contrappunti orchestrali. Assecondati dalla grande varietà espressiva delle sue composizioni, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Thad Jones e Al Grey dispiegano le migliori doti solistiche, mentre una sezione ritmica gioiello, centrata sul duo Basie-Green, offre la summa filosofica e pratica dello Swing.

Come bonus ascoltiamo un disco insolito, "String Along with Basie". Le session con gli archi erano assai gradite ai solisti jazz dell'epoca, si pensi a Parker, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker. Certo la carica ritmica di Basie spesso stride con la lettura degli archi come ben mostrato da Summertime, ma in fondo anche questa tensione ha il suo fascino, poi in tre brani ritroviamo la penna di Quincy Jones ed è un piacere ascoltare maestri del calibro di Illinois Jacquet e Ben Webster.
