Tessa Souter: Obsession

Per capire che ci si trova davanti a un'artista raffinata e complessa basta ascoltare la tesa e languida cover di "Eleanor Rigby," posta proprio in apertura di questo sorprendente Obsession. Tessa Souter è una cantante senza dubbio fortemente imparentata col jazz, ma incline a un concetto di musica nel quale predominano saldi appigli alla forma-canzone classica. Nel suo ultimo album sceglie di cantare una manciata di ottime cover (oltre al già citato episodio beatlesiano vanno segnalate una incalzante "White Room" dei Cream e una "Riverman" che alla metafisicità tutta inglese di Nick Drake sostituisce una vena avvolgente più in linea con le origini per metà caraibiche della cantante) e alcuni brani originali di pregevole fattura.

"Obsession," con il basso di Gary Wang che pare fare il verso al celebre avvio di A Love Supreme alleggerisce un inizio di album piuttosto votato ad atmosfere pensose e gravi. Crescono pian piano le influenze di Souter e della sua band nelle dodici canzoni di Obsession: la chitarra di Janos Ennis si ritaglia sempre più parentesi che guardano al flamenco, la fisarmonica di Victor Prieto e il violino di Todd Reynolds lambiscono gli arrangiamenti dando al tutto un sapore molto vicino al folk moderno: irruenze manouche, pulsioni da bossa nova, e persino un leggerissimo profumo di Louisiana sono presenti qua e là, in una miscela di etno-pop-jazz raffinato e, perché no, molto sexy.

La voce di Tessa Souter è personale, riconoscibile e priva di quell'impostazione che spesso condanna ottime cantanti all'anonimato: in questo senso "Crystal Rain" e "Afro Blue/Footprints" sono due episodi esemplari. La band che l'accompagna non è meno entusiasmante quando firma arrangiamenti minimali dal mood convincente, pensati per suggerire atmosfere prima ancora che disegnare armonie.

Unico neo, forse, la tensione calante percepibile nella seconda metà dell'album, quando le sorprendenti soluzioni sonore ascoltate fino a quel punto allentano la presa, perdendo appena un poco d'originalità e preferendo rifugiarsi su terreni più canonici. Sfugge alla tendenza la conclusiva "Usha's Wedding," splendido brano dal profumo indiano.

Un disco comunque notevole, coraggioso e di grande interesse.
