Sarah Jane Morris: Migratory Birds
Molti la ricordano per aver dato contributi vocali nella musica che "conta" ("Don't Leave Me This Way" con Jimmy Somerville e i Communards). Altri per la sua triplice imprevedibile partecipazione al festival di Sanremo (nell'edizione 1990 con Riccardo Fogli; nel 1991 in coppia con Riccardo Cocciante per interpretare "Se stiamo insieme," brano vincitore di quell'edizione; nel 2006, per cantare con Simona Bencini il brano "Tempesta").
Ma quello che serve è tutto nella mirabile vocalità dell'inglese. Che in questo disco emerge in tutta la sua smagliante preziosità. Accompagnata da un po' di gente che ci sa fare: Marc Ribot; Ralph Carney (che guarnisce "If You Want Me To Stay"), Eric Mingus (che impreziosisce il duentto nella "Wild Horses" di rollingstoneana memoria), la cantante rende affascinante questo disco di interpretazioni di classici rock & pop.
Bob Dylan ("Just Like a Woman," "To Ramona"), Velvet Underground ("Pale Blue Eyes"), Rickie Lee Jones ("Skeletons"), tra gli altri, sono tutti in fila ad aspettare che Sarah la canti per loro. Un'altra volta.
E la sua voce è come un flash notturno che fissa sul negativo di una pellicola l'atto di nascita di ogni canzone, ancor prima che venga vestita e poi autenticata dal suo autore originario.
Se si potesse fare un esempio (c'è ne sarebbero diversi in questo lavoro), questo sarebbe "Toxic". Immaginata così (più che interpretata) sembra che viva di una luminosità diversa, più introversa, a tratti anche più oscura, vissuta. Paradossalmente, Sarah, in questa operazione fenomenologica, fa avvicinare anche i più testardi detrattori all'originale brano cantato da Britney Spears. E non è poco.
