Eccolo così in questo lavoro, registrato per l'italiana Splasc(H), alle prese con alcuni standard e con composizioni originali che sono autentici, complessi compendi della storia della musica nera. A cominciare da "Expansion", ritmicissima e sostenuta da un pedale ipnotico, per proseguire con "DB Blues", inventario delle modalità espressive della forma-madre deljazz, fino a giungere a due delle sue più note composizioni, la narrativa "Crucificado" e “Margy Pargy”, che rilegge a suo modo la tradizione del ragtime (e Jelly Roll Morton è tra gli autori che Burrell ha approfonditamente studiato).
Non che gli standard inclusi nel programma manchino di suggestione: vuoi per il bel suono dello Steinway, vuoi per la sofisticata essenzialità dell'interpretazione, "Lush Life" e "So in Love" toccano l'ascoltatore, la prima impennandosi in modo imprevisto, la seconda mantenendosi invece espressivamente su un piano di oscura ispettività, dall’atmosfera quasi classica.
Un lavoro che conferma il grande magistero che i musicisti traggono dalla loro esperienza musicale e di vita.
