Marc Ribot and the Young Philadelphians: Live In Tokyo
Ribot arruola una formazione vera detonatrice di groove e composta da Jamaaladeen Tacuma al basso, Calvin Weston alla batteria, Mary Halvorson alla chitarra, a cui aggiunge una sezione archi. La missione è quella di rivisitare e riproporre il mito del suono di Philadelphia. Un'esplosione di soul, funk e tinto d'Ornette Coleman.
Si attinge a piene mani infatti da quella fabbrica di hit scegliendo alcuni pezzi dei Trammps, Teddy Pendergrass, Silver Convention, Ohio Players, People's Choice, MFSB e Van McCoy e espandendo l'orizzonte pop in direzione jazz. La chitarra di Ribot suona spesso free senza mai perdere il filo del discorso, mirabilmente in equilibrio su un crinale elettrico e grooveggiante come di rado è capitato di sentire nella produzione del chitarrista di Newark.
Un disco la cui bontà è stata confermata proprio questa estate in un concerto bolognese e, ancora prima, lo scorso autunno, con un set a Milano, in ciascuna occasione con due sezioni archi locali.
