Enrico Pieranunzi: Live at the Village Vanguard
Come già in The Chant of Time del 1997, gli sono a fianco Marc Johnson e Paul Motian: con ognuno di loro Pieranunzi ha collaborato assiduamente in oltre vent'anni, prevalentemente con formazioni, anche trii, diversamente aggregati. Qui il bassista e il batterista sono di nuovo assieme dimostrandosi accompagnatori ideali, impeccabili, sempre fluidi e reattivi nella giusta misura.
Ne risulta "un classico" per equilibrio, eleganza e buon gusto, tanto che qualcuno potrebbe sostenere che non c'è niente di nuovo sotto il sole. Eppure si scorge qualche inflessione, qualche atteggiamento mentale ed espressivo che ci avvertono che si tratta del Pieranunzi di oggi, con una sensibilità leggermente diversa da quella swingante e impegnata, di austero e poetico intimismo, che ha caratterizzato il suo pianismo nei nel corso dei decenni.
Mi riferisco in particolare all'accattivante linea melodica dell'original "Tales from the Unexpected," al suo avvolgente e leggiadro incedere narrativo. Per il resto è il caso di porre l'attenzione sui brani che aprono e chiudono il CD: il brioso e immaginifico "I Mean You" di Monk, con un magistrale Motian, e l'insolita, movimentata interpretazione di "La dolce vita" di Rota, con Johnson in particolare evidenza. Anche queste reinterpretazioni risultano una conferma da un lato di un rinnovamento nell'approccio pianistico di Pieranunzi, dall'altro dello stato di grazia di quel trio irripetibile in quelle serate al Village Vanguard.
