Tyshawn Sorey: Koan
Quella strada trova in questo nuovo Koan - il cui titolo, non a caso, si richiama a una pratica meditativa buddhista che si sviluppa grazie a un racconto o un interrogativo spesso paradossale che svela i limiti della logica - una ulteriore elaborazione. Rispetto al lavoro precedente si riscontra una maggiore asciuttezza di formazione, che viene qui ridotta alle percussioni di Sorey, al basso di Thomas Morgan e alla chitarra di Todd Neufeld e le sei composizioni suonano davvero come astratti enigmi sonori da soppesare nell'esperienza della meditazione.
Uno sviluppo spiraleggiante e lento, gli strappi sparsi della chitarra e le sottolineature della batteria, un attento rapporto con il silenzio che dona un peso specifico sempre diverso al suono, sono gli ingredienti cui punta Sorey e che richiedono un'attenzione davvero particolare da parte degli ascoltatori. Restano molte delle perplessità già evidenziate al tempo: Sorey è musicista sensibile e così lo sono i suoi partner, ma la sua qualità di leader non è così forte [e la musica così interessante] da esigere quel surplus di attenzione che è indispensabile per un disco come questo. Faticoso.
