Jazz Interpretations of Ravel and Faure

Click the play button to listen

Jazz emerged as a musical force in the US in the 1920s. Maurice Ravel, hailed around the world as France's greatest living composer, traveled to the US in 1928 where he was exposed to jazz firsthand. Jazz left a profound impression on Ravel's music, which eventually inspired jazz musicians as well.

How influential was Ravel on the development of jazz? Charlie Parker mentioned Ravel as a composer he admired in a blindfold test for DownBeat Magazine. Miles Davis wrote "We were into Ravel. We were just leaning toward—like Ravel, playing a sound only with the white keys." Billy Strayhorn was a great admirer of Ravel. Herbie Hancock stated, "Over the years, I had often used Ravel's harmonies in my music."

In this hour, you'll hear jazz musicians ranging from Bill Evans and Gary Burton, to Jorge Pardo and Hot Club Of Detroit as they put their stamp on the music of these innovative French composers.
