JB Floyd - Thomas Buckner - George Marsh: In Crossing the Busy Street
I tre protagonisti sono piuttosto attempati e spesso in passato le loro esperienze si sono incrociate. Il pianista JB Floyd costituisce il perno di due diversi sodalizi: nei primi otto brevi brani, registrati dal vivo alla University of Miami, sostiene un duo con il cantante Tom Buckner, mentre nei rimanenti sei, incisi in studio, viene affiancato dal batterista George Marsh.
Nel primo caso la voce baritonale di Buckner, dall'emissione un po' ebbra e sbracata, modulata da un ampio vibrato e da un'intonazione ondivaga, canta testi poetici di Daniel Abdal-Havy Moore. Il piano di Floyd fornisce un sostegno ponderato, elegante e asciutto, a volte vagamente sghembo, che può ricordare Ran Blake. Il risultato di questa collaborazione può essere definito una sorta di nuovo, austero lied, oppure uno spiritual profano, statico e poco vibrante. Non sarebbe stato inopportuno riportare nelle note di copertina i testi recitati/cantati da Buckner.
Nell'incontro fra il pianista e il batterista si assiste a libere improvvisazioni sui medesimi temi scritti da Floyd ed esposti nella prima parte del CD. Il linguaggio si fa più libero ed espressivo, la pronuncia più jazzistica, il percorso più movimentato e la durata dei brani si dilata. Mentre il pianista estende le sue capacità dinamiche ed armoniche dimostrando un'efficace varietà di tocco, Marsh somministra accenti soprattutto sulle pelli con un senso ritmico claudicante e una sonorità un po' scura, secondo un respiro che alterna distensioni e addensamenti. Il loro dialogo dà forma ad estatiche visioni e materiche agglomerazioni, rincorse e ripensamenti con esiti del tutto convincenti.
In definitiva In Crossing the Busy Street, senza essere un disco imperdibile, rappresenta senza dubbio un'opera autoprodotta singolare e coraggiosa, estranea alle mode commerciali come alle correnti più impegnate, tuttavia intrisa di una sua intima, antieroica ma orgogliosa onestà espressiva.
