Improvising the Classics: Jazz Goes Baroque
Click the play button to listen
I love classical music almost as much as jazz. Like jazz, classical music is a big tent, spanning the entire musical spectrum from medieval chant to twelve tone atonality.Jazz musicians today get most of their music education in universities and colleges, and often in conservatories. A great many of today's jazz artists have a deep appreciation for classical music, and on occasion use the melodies from the classical canon as springboards for improvisation.
Improvisation was prevalent in Baroque music, particularly in melodic and rhythmic ornamentation, leading some to quip that Bach was the first jazz musician.
In this hour, you'll hear jazz artists interpret some of the Baroque masterpieces. Featured artists include Chris Cheek, Joshua Redman, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck, Enrico Pieranunzi and Lars Danielsson.
