Mark Dresser - Ed Harkins - Steven Schick: House of Mirrors

Pensato inizialmente come un duo tra Mark Dresser e Ed Harkins, il progetto House of Mirrors è stato poi realizzato in trio con l’aggiunta del percussionista Steven Schick. Scelta quanto mai vincente perché il frullare delle percussioni, le macchie timbriche, il pulviscolo ritmico di Schick tolgono la registrazione dalle secche di un jazz eccessivamente cameristico. Pur avendo come riferimento la musica contemporanea e musicisti come Iannis Xenakis e Roger Reynolds, per citare due esponenti particolarmente amati da Harkins e Schick, House of Mirrors pulsa di vita propria e nelle sue vene scorre anche il linguaggio dell’improvvisazione.

La maestria sui rispettivi strumenti è elemento altrettanto fondamentale per la riuscita del progetto. Mark Dresser si muove tra le strutture aperte delle composizioni come nel giardino di casa, e con uno speciale sistema di amplificazione riesce a trarre dal suo contrabbasso una gamma infinita di soluzioni che non prescindono comunque dal suono scuro, caldo, ammaliante dello strumento. Ed Harkins utilizza i suoi vari tipi di trombe in modo assai poco convenzionale; trilli, soffi, sbuffi, frammenti di frasi che paradossalmente danno ritmo, un ritmo più metafisico che reale, alle esecuzioni. Mentre Schick alla scansione metrica sembra poco interessato, impegnato com’è a utilizzare poco ortodosse tecniche percussive per creare umori e silenzi sui quali adagiare le idee musicali del trio.

Alla fine House of Mirrors risulta uno specchio fedele della filosofia Clean Feed, etichetta portoghese impegnata a dare testimonianza anche delle frange meno etichettabili che ruotano attorno alla musica improvvisata.
