Arrigo Cappelletti Quintet: Hot Music

Dopo il gruppo con Andrea Massaria, Nicola Stranieri, Mat Maneri (ad esempio in Metamorphosis), il pianista lombardo rinnova la collaborazione col sassofonista Giulio Martino (già ascoltato nel quartetto che ha inciso Mysterious, Leo Records) presentando un'organico più ampio e totalmente rinnovato. Troviamo infatti il noto trombettista Sergio Orlandi e i musicisti norvegesi Adrian Myhr al contrabbasso e Tore Sandbakken alla batteria.

La strumentazione è quella di un classico quintetto hard-bop ma la musica va oltre le formule canoniche senza per questo disdegnare la tradizione: la sintesi è un modern mainstream avanzato con innesti cameristici e momenti astratti. Anche se emergono riferimenti a Shorter ben oltre l'esplicito omaggio d'apertura, il disco evidenzia una chiara identità grazie al lavoro compositivo di Cappelletti, tanto ricercato e meticoloso quanto aperto ai contributi personali.

Ne risulta un lavoro dagli affascinanti contrasti interni, capace di coniugare ambizione e spontaneità, tensione narrativa e pregnanti confronti improvvisati. Una musica in cui le forme del jazz convivono con quelle di derivazione accademica e trova le sintesi più avvincenti in temi d'ampio respiro come le due versioni di "Isafyordur," nell'originale rivisitazione del tango di "Tanghedia" oppure nel lirico "Corale for Carla".

Brani più canonici, ma sempre interessanti, sono il danzante "Facile," lo shorteriano "Break 2" e il delicato valzer "Intermission Music".
