Ci sono diversi elementi propri della musica di Michael Vlatkovich (la pienezza, per esempio, peraltro qui quanto mai stemperata, riflessiva, a tratti quasi assorta) così come abbiamo imparato a conoscerli nei numerosi album da lui pubblicati in tempi recenti, ma c'è molto anche dei suoi partner, in questo lavoro inciso a Los Angeles a inizio 2014.

La tutto sommato singolare front line del quintetto comprende tanto per cominciare, oltre al suo trombone, la tromba e il flicorno soprano di Jeff Kaiser, spesso sordinati, e soprattutto la voce di Anna Homler (anche apprezzata artista visiva), col risultato di generare un cocktail con un retrogusto particolarmente "contemporaneo" (nell'accezione più ampia del termine), a tratti persino europeo (per esempio nella titletrack e nel rumoristico—anche, ma non solo—"Doors Little Windows"), ovviamente lambendo qua e là (e comunque da posizioni sempre piuttosto ellittiche) il song.

Oltre ai brani citati, le cose migliori sembrano arrivare da "Before But After" e "Oranger Than Happiness," alquanto eterei, quasi olimpici, "Round Triangles," tutto giocato nel segno degli ottoni, "Your Ark Is Waiting," per soli trombone e contrabbasso, "Choir hose 293," particolarmente solido, e "Thunderous Silence," dominato dalla batteria.

Un disco nel contempo consistente e raffinato.
