Larry Coryell: Heavy Feel

Con questo Heavy Feel il chitarrista Larry Coryell cerca di ripercorrere le strade che aveva battuto tanti anni fa, all'inizio della sua carriera solistica. Allora gli album si chiamavano Coryell, Lady Coryell, Basics, Fairyland e Spaces. Tanta acqua è passata sotto ai ponti e Coryell ha vissuto stagioni diverse che lo hanno visto diventare dapprima uno degli eroi del jazz-rock e della fusion, per poi cercare di recuperare un posto di riguardo nella placida corrente del jazz mainstream. Dopo che anni prima, sin dal suo esordio con il rivoluzionario quartetto di Gary Burton, aveva cercato di scardinare l'idea di normalità e di centralità, con le sue curiosità mai dome e i suoi talenti sicuramente degni di attenzione.

Il giochino riesce solo a metà, l'energia non è più quella della fine degli anni sessanta e degli inizi del decennio successivo. I ritmi che lo assecondano in questo Heavy Feel non sono più gli stessi (il bassista Matt Montgomery e il batterista Mike Hughes oggi, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones e Ra Kalam Bob Moses allora, solo per citarne alcuni) e anche questo contribuisce a rendere meno consistente il progetto. Anche il sax di George Brooks non ha niente a che vedere con lo spirito indomito di Steve Marcus e Jim Pepper.

Ci sono comunque molti momenti interessanti, divagazioni curiose, piccoli groove pieni di belle intenzioni. Una sorta di quaderno degli appunti che vengono sviluppati con un po' di fiato corto.
