Cyrus Chestnut: Genuine Chestnut
Su questo disco tale peculiarità fortemente distintiva del pianista statunitense è stata edulcorata, per essere messa al servizio di un calderone in cui la matrice più autenticamente afroamericana viene sovrapposta a sonorità più facili e leggere.
Con la consueta maestria Chestnut si muove disinvoltamente tra armonie jazzistiche, afrocubane e R&B, senza riuscire a focalizzare il percorso proposto in un progetto compiuto. Tra alti e bassi, le undici tracce del disco lasciano intravedere alcuni momenti interessanti, in cui talora riaffiora la freschezza di idee e di fraseggio delle incisioni migliori. È il caso ad esempio della rivisitazione in solitudine di un classico (“Lord, I Give Myself To You”) del repertorio gospel afromericano, rivisitato con una superba pratica esecutiva, inarrivabile per molti pianisti della sua generazione.
Pur risultando più convenzionali, i brani interpretati insieme al chitarrista Russell Malone costituiranno paradossalmente le carte vincenti di questo CDinciso splendidamente, grazie ad una tecnica di registrazione all’avanguardia.
