Jean Paul Bourelly: News from a Darked Out Room

Il chitarrista Jean Paul Bourelly spiazza tutti con un album in solo alla chitarra acustica, una escursione appassionata nei territori del blues inteso come trascrizione dei singulti dell’anima. Ancestrali scenari haitiani si materializzano senza sosta e mettono a nudo la magia che sta dietro alla capacità di esprimere sentimenti veri, brucianti di crudele attualità. Uno sforzo apprezzabile per il chitarrista nato a Chicago e vissuto pericolosamente fra jazz e rock alternativo, con il funky a fare da ticchettio di fondo e la grande ombra di Jimi Hendrix a dominare la scena.

Sono dodici bozzetti che vanno dai quattro ai sei minuti l’uno, quasi tutti scritti da Bourelly ed eseguiti con una rilassatezza che non sottintende mai una mancanza di tensione. Il chitarrista utilizza la voce per raccontarci storie che sanno di sensualità, di whiskey, di speranze deluse, di amicizia e solidarietà. Oppure mormora fonemi complementari ai suoni che emergono dalle sei corde, in una comunione espressiva che lascia il segno. Spesso il corpo della chitarra acustica diventa fonte di elementi percussivi che caratterizzano con decisione l’andamento ritmico dei brani.

La conclusiva "Cross Cut Saw" scritta da Tommy McClennan e resa celebre da Albert King, si uniforma al clima tradizionale degli undici brani precedenti e diventa un veicolo perfetto per rappresentare quel mood in chiaroscuro che sin dal titolo è stato scelto da Bourelly per questo album.
