Fosterchild, Jim Black, Mathieu Donarier & Armaroli/Piccolo/Sharp

Drummer Fabian Arends' quintet Fosterchild highlights this edition of One Man's Jazz with a killer of an album—Order At Agan Live. This German/Danish band of Arends, Kasper Tranberg on trumpet, Sebastian Gille on saxophone/clarinet, Jacob Anderskov on piano, and David Helm on bass exude power, energy and an original language throughout the music, recorded at the end of a long tour. One could apply similar adjectives to Better You Don't, the latest from Germany-based drummer Jim Black & The Schrimps. Black is required listening for all. French saxophonist Matthieu Donarier is another don't-miss artist. His new Coastline finds him and his quartet looking to an omnipresent inspiration: Steve Lacy. Meanwhile, vibraphonist Sergio Armaroli, bassist Steve Piccolo and guitarist Elliott Sharp defy description on their new Imaginary Songbook a 2-CD album with 64 tracks, all but one shorter than two minutes. Playing both known and obscure standards, the trio's terse statements teeter on free jazz throughout. There are other excellent new releases sampled as well, from French clarinet master Louis Sclavis, trombonist Jacob Garchik, Finnish trumpeter Eero Savela, and Trio of Bloom—(Nels Cline, Craig Taborn & Marcus Gilmore). This show is definitely loaded! (Fabian Arends photo by Heiko Specht.)
