Jaimie Branch: Fly or Die

Un debutto discografico all'età di trentaquattro anni è evento raro in un mercato dove abbondano baby fenomeni, giovani promesse, fuoriclasse del futuro e dischi del secolo. Evento raro e prezioso perché questo Fly or Die è disco di sconvolgente bellezza. La protagonista è Jaimie Branch, trombettista e compositrice sconosciuta ai più, frequentazioni importanti nella scena avant newyorchese, vita tormentata, forza della natura straripante. Come il soffio vitale che apre il disco, un vortice d'aria che in sedici secondi ti catapulta nel groove irresistibile dettato dalle prodigiose bacchette di Chad Taylor. E siamo già knock out.

La fragilità della tromba di Branch, il suo tono screziato arrivano come un pugno nello stomaco, senza fragore, con una gentilezza ingannevole che scatena emozioni così intense da stordire. Anche perché il contrabbasso di Jason Ajemian e il violoncello di Tomeka Reid sono tutt'altro che decorativi, lavorando su oscuri bordoni e indolenti pulsazioni il primo e inventandosi stralunati contrappunti il secondo. Si trovano echi folk, riff rockeggianti, improvvisazioni, musica d'avanguardia, momenti meditativi altri di contagiosa cantabilità (provate a resistere a "Theme 001" e a "Theme 002"!), altri ancora di sospesa esplorazione.

Ma la straordinaria personalità di Branch trasforma il tutto in qualcosa di unico, in bilico tra sogno e materica crudezza, tra allucinate visioni e lucide geometrie. "Se non fossi una musicista il mio principale desiderio sarebbe diventare una criminale" ha affermato Jaimie durante un'intervista di presentazione del disco. Non ci è dato sapere che percentuale di verità sia contenuta nelle sue parole, ma con certezza siamo eternamente grati al destino di averci concesso una straordinaria musicista.
