Dave Liebman ha iniziato l'indagine nel lontano 1997 (The Elements: Water, inciso con Pat Metheny, Cecil McBee e Billy Hart) ed ha continuato nel 2011 con Walter Quintus all'elettronica (Air). Oggi, per dare palpabile espressione all'archetipo del fuoco, il sassofonista s'è rivolto a due eminenti partner di fine anni sessanta, la celebrata sezione ritmica composta da Dave Holland e Jack DeJohnette. «Ho voluto ricreare il feeling della musica che suonavamo nei loft days di quel primo periodo —scrive Liebman nelle note del disco —presentando una forte dose di free jazz, ispirato ad Ascension, la fondamentale incisione di John Coltrane». Ai due partner si aggiunge il pianista Kenny Werner.
Il risultato è una musica che si infiamma nell'interazione tra le magistrali esplosioni poliritmiche di DeJohnette, i lunghi e pregnanti interventi del leader al sax tenore e soprano, il dissonante lavoro armonico di Werner e il possente e fantasioso contrabbasso di Holland. Cinque dei sei brani risultano scritti da Liebman ma il percorso musicale privilegia libere improvvisazioni, con ampio spazio alle soluzioni in duo o in trio. Il brano «Fire» si sviluppa lungo ben 32 minuti in un inventivo snodarsi di tensioni e distensioni, tra momenti d'astratto camerismo e veementi collettivi free. Nel conclusivo («Ashes») la trasmutazione dell'elementi fuoco in cenere è rappresentata da un lirico episodio che assume forme tradizionali, con Liebman al flauto e al tenore evocante Eric Dolphy.
