Modern Art Orchestra: Eclectic Path

Quest'orchestra ungherese è un brillante organico che aderisce ai modelli mainstream con sicurezza e personalità, senza sfigurare di fronte ai migliori esempi del genere. Dalla sua nascita - nel 2005 - è guidata da Kornél Fekete-Kovács, un bandleader e solista di tromba che nel 1998 è stato tra i fondatori della Budapest Jazz Orchestra ed ha svolto significative esperienze in altre orchestre europee, soprattutto scandinave.

Fekete-Kovács è uno dei massimi musicisti e animatori della scena jazzistica ungherese. Scena che è rapidamente cresciuta nell'ultimo decennio, sia nell'assimilazione dei modelli storici del jazz che nella sintesi tra questi e le tradizioni popolari magiare.

I nomi che costituiscono assieme al leader il fulcro creativo della Modern Art Orchestra sono Szabolcs Oláh, Viktor Hárs e Kristóf Bacsó. I primi due soprattutto sul versante compositivo mentre il terzo è uno dei migliori sassofonisti europei e caratterizza con i suoi interventi gli eleganti temi "Late Musings" ed "Elliptic Path" e l'estroverso "Full Moon". Altri solisti in bell'evidenza sono i pianisti Dániel Szabó e Gábor Cseke.

Ma l'orchestra è sorprendente non solo per la carica esplosiva dei collettivi e la coordinazione tra le sezioni ma anche per la duttilità che dimostra nel dosare gli impasti e le dinamiche.

I punti di riferimento sono ovviamente l'orchestra di Thad Jones-Mel Lewis ma per l'opulenza timbrica e l'ambizione di operare su tempi e arrangiamenti complessi ricorda Don Ellis (si ascolti soprattutto "The Fifth Seal") e Stan Kenton.
