Sarah Hommel: Drum All
“Drum All” è stato registrato dal vivo nel 2003 e documenta una lunga sessione live in cui la percussionista e batterista Sarah Hommel ha riunito un ensemble di soli percussionisti (Bill Ware, Rich Zukor, Victor Lewis, Victor Jones e Mino Cinelu). L’ampia gamma di strumenti utilizzati insieme ad una vivacissima dinamica di gruppo danno a questa registrazione un particolare interesse.

Sei dei cinque pezzi sono della Hommel; “A Tribute Arangement” (con un bellissimo motivetto caraibico intonato di sottofondo dalla Hommel) è un arrangiamento di un pezzo ispirato ai ritmi afro-cubani della tradizione haitiana di Subri Moulin.

L’ensemble celebra ben note tradizioni sud africane e caraibiche, ma non disdegna anche, in alcuni passaggi, sentiti omaggi alla tradizione jazzistica. Sarah Hommel mostra una particolare abilità nel comporre musiche melodiche per percussione, una capacità acquisita attraverso lunghi anni di lavoro con maestri quali Michael Carvin, Chiarii Persip e Max Roach, ma anche con alcuni membri dell’ensemble come Jones e Lewis.

Lavoro bello, vivace e interessante quello dell’ensemble e della Hommel. Speriamo di poter ascoltare e parlare ancora di questa brava percussionista, che per ora si autoproduce.
