Barbara Sukowa and the X - Patsys: Devouring Time

Instancabili attrici. Era Mieze in Berlin Alexanderplatz di Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Ha collaborato con Margarethe von Trotta. Ha vinto a Venezia nel 1981 l'Orso d'oro come migliore attrice. È stata affianco di Michael Cimino, Lars Von Trier, David Cronenberg, Volker Schlöndorff, Agnieszka Holland e Tim Robbins. Non contenta di questa intensa attività cinematografica, Barbara Sukowa ha deciso di mettere su un gruppo rock col marito Robert Longo e con Jon Kessler.

Ma è un rock defilato, pieno di mille deviazioni e contaminazioni. In questo viaggio molto rockettaro e letterario, la Sukowa non si è fatta mancare proprio niente, scegliendo nomi di primo piano nel campo dei turnisti di lusso.

Il tastieriesta Anthony Coleman è stato a fianco di John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Elliott Sharp e Dave Douglas, tra gli altri. Il chitarrista Knox Chandler ha prestato i suoi favori alla corte di Hal Willner e R.E.M.. Mentre il curriculum del bassista Sean Conly ha dalla sua Freddie Hubbard. Anton Fier, batterista, ha fondato e guidato il gruppo di culto Golden Palominos oltre ad aver lavorato con i Lounge Lizards, Zorn e Bill Laswell.

Il nome della band è mutuato dalla cantante country Patsy Cline, mentre la scaletta immaginata in questo CD, Devouring Time, è quanto meno fantasiosa e piena di colpi di scena.

Barbara Sukowa fedele al suo background sguazza tra la recitazione a tempo di riff brucianti e arrangiamenti ipnotici come base ai versi immortali scritti da William Shakespeare ("Juliet Monologue," "Sonnet 147/My Love Is As A Fever") a una "stralunata" e ululante versione di "Blue Moon".

Non contenta, sfida il repertorio di Tom Waits ("Black Wings"), quello di Kurt Weill ("Lost in the Stars"), di Willie Nelson ("Crazy"), di Blind Gary Davis ("Death Don't Have No Mercy").

Di qua e di là spuntano anche poemi recitati in tedesco ("Menschlieches Elende," "An Die Sterner"): l'attrice sembra incarnare lo spirito sciamanico di Patti Smith misto al carisma teutonico di Marlene Dietrich.

Il risultato è anche piacevole in questi 70 minuti e passa. Anche se troppa è la carne a cuocere e la teatralità è fin troppo insistita.
