Andrew Bishop: De Profundis
Polistrumentista, compositore e docente alla Michigan University di Ann Arbor, Andrew Bishop rielabora in questo suo nuovo album il De Profundis Clamavi di Josquin Desprez, autore franco-fiammingo a cavallo fra Quattro e Cinquecento, riprendendone le sei parti nelle tracce dispari del presente lavoro, con risultati senz'altro degni di attenzione.

Le temperature indulgono prevedibilmente al cameristico, però senza eccessi né autocompiacimenti di sorta: il cosiddetto "tiro" è garantito dalla costante propulsione offerta da Gerald Cleaver (peraltro sempre felicemente screziata, articolata), in particolare nei brani in cui Bishop si dedica ai sassofoni ("There Are Many Monkeys" e "The Commute," per esempio), col rimuginare del contrabbasso di Tim Flood (il trio è insieme da anni, e si sente) a far da collante.

Sono peraltro forse gli episodi clarinettistici (l'iniziale "Introit," "Bottled," il conclusivo "Benedictus"), nonché il flautistico "Six Days, Five Nights," i più preziosi di un album che raramente si adagia su se stesso, mantenendo invece viva la tensione intestina e la capacità di evolversi via via senza dare mai nulla per scontato.
