Ferdinando Faraò: Darwinsuite

Negli ultimi anni Ferdinando Faraò è andato via via assumendo un ruolo che pochi batteristi nella storia della musica afroamericana sono stati in grado di sostenere con successo. Quello di leader illuminato, di catalizzatore di talenti, di prolifico compositore, di curioso sperimentatore. E ultimamente la forma musicale che sembra rispondere al meglio a queste esigenze pare essere la suite; dopo la Eschersuite (DDQ-2003) realizzata in quintetto, la Pollocksuite (Music Center-2007) che vede all'opera un doppio quartetto più batteria, ecco la Darwinsuite per quintetto jazz e quartetto vocale.

Voci che non sono puro decoro o semplice abbellimento coreografico, ma voci funzionali al progetto musicale, voci narranti, voci che raccordano, voci che incidono sulla materia, voci austere, voci che esaltano l'organizzazione sonora pensata da Faraò. Che si rivela rigorosa, geometrica nella lucidità intrinseca delle composizioni, essenziale nelle linee espositive, una sorta di teorema del pentagramma dove la rigidità dei postulati viene continuamente messa in discussione dalla sensibilità improvvisativa dei musicisti.

Così che l'intera registrazione poggia su questo equilibrio instabile tra le precise architetture create da Faraò e i continui sabotaggi interni operati dai musicisti, minimi slittamenti che non mutano la visione generale ma creano quelle vitali tensioni necessarie a rendere palpitante, viva, stimolante ogni fase della registrazione. E la strepitosa versione della conclusiva "Pithecantropus Erectus," una sorta di ribellione antropologica nella quale i musicisti liberano una espressività primordiale che magicamente si ricompone nel celeberrimo tema mingusiano, è la ciliegina sulla torta di un album da ascoltare e riascoltare.

Darwinsuite è meno visionario, meno audace del precedente Pollocksuite, ma possiede una misura scientifica che sarebbe piaciuta al grande scienziato britannico e aggiunge un altro significativo tassello al mondo espressivo di Ferdinando Faraò.
