Wadada Leo Smith’s Mbira: Dark Lady of the Sonnets
Questo triangolo magico è in grado di evocare atmosfere e sonorità che perdono ogni connotazione geografica per trasportare l'ascoltatore in un mondo di bellezza intensa e sospesa.
Il lirismo lacerato della tromba di Smith si stende così nelle cinque belle composizioni sulla ragnatela tesa con angolazioni sempre differenti da Min Xiao-Fen [talvolta baileyana nel suo approccio alle corde dello strumento] e con i tamburi mobili di akLaff: accade ad esempio nella fiammeggiante "Blues: Cosmic Beauty," così come nella spaziosa "Zulu Water Festival," per non dire della variegata dedica alla madre del trombettista che apre il disco e della title-track dedicata a Billie Holiday [ma con un titolo che richiama Shakespeare...], impreziosita anche dal canto ammaliante della musicista cinese.
Il disco - registrato nel 2007 e pubblicato dalla finlandese TUM Records - si chiude con "Mbira" [nelle note accluse al disco Smith spiega che il riferimento è alla omonima forma musicale dello Zimbabwe], musica per danzare costruita con una complessa strategia di connessioni improvvisate.
Lavoro permeato di spiritualità e di intriganti articolazioni della materia sonora, Dark Lady of the Sonnets si aggiunge alla recente corposa discografia di Wadada Leo Smith [giunto al traguardo dei 70 anni, come potrete vedere nel video qui sotto] e sarebbe un torto rimanesse per qualche motivo un episodio minore. È un triangolo magico, perché catalizzatore di originalità espressiva e bellezza.
